The mobile call received by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) might have been from his teacher, Leader of the House and Highways and Higher Education Minister Lakshman Kiriella said in Parliament yesterday.
He made this observation yesterday when Chief Opposition Whip and JVP Parliamentarian Anura Kumara Dissanayake questioned in Parliament as to who the IGP was addressing as ‘Sir’ while answering a cellular phone call during an event on a previous day.
Raising a question MP Dissanayake said that he raised the same matter on Thursday evening in Parliament too and the Law and Order Minister should reveal the Parliament as to who the IGP was calling ‘sir’.
“One ‘sir’ instructed the IGP not to arrest a Dishan Wickramaratne Gunasekara,” MP Dissanayake said.
“It was telecast. Parliament has a right to know about it. Dishan Gunasekara was the former Basnayake Nilame, a close relative of the high class families of the previous regime and also the former acting Director and Chairman of the Ceylon Mineral Sand Corporation.
There are several cases against him before the FCID. We want to know was it the Minister who ordered the IGP not to arrest him. What I trust is that the ‘sir’ to the IGP should either be the Minister related to Police or the Prime Minister. So the relevant Minister should reveal to the Parliament as to who ordered the IGP not to arrest Dishan.”
“This is the interpretation of opposition member on this incident,”Leader of the House and Minister Kiriella said. “It could be either right or wrong. Based on the same interpretation, he cannot make various accusations to others. He could have addressed his teacher in school as. ‘sir’.Even now we call our teachers ‘Sir’.”
