Talks are now underway between the governments of India and Sri Lanka to seek a resolution at diplomatic level to the problem of Indian fishermen poaching in Sri Lankan waters using bottom trawling and other prohibited fishing methods, states a release by the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources. The release said the first round of talks was held in New Delhi in November with Ministers Mahinda Amaraweera and Mangala Samaraweera leading the Sri Lankan delegation. The second round of talks are due to be held in Colombo on January 2 next year (2017). The preceding officla level talks in this connection will be held in India on December 29 and 30. A four member official team led by Fisheries Ministry Secretary Mangalika Adhikari and comprising Fisheries department Director General Christy Lal Fernando and a Navy representative will attend the talks in India on December 29 and 30.
