The Health Ministry will launch a special programme, ‘Happy Villages’ on January 8 from Halkandawila in the Beruwala Divisional Secretariat Division to mark the second anniversary of the first term of the presidency, Health Ministry sources said.
According to the sources, the programme to be implemented under Health Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne to make people’s lives happy, healthy and prosperous. It will be implemented through rural leaders.
Over 70 percent of the total population and over 90 percent of the poor in the country live in villages. The main objective of the programme is to protect health of the poor and strengthen them economically.
The Health Ministry still provides nutritional packages for pregnant mothers which commenced under the government’s 100-day programme, the sources said. Educating people about right nutrition and food habits, implementing tobacco and alcohol prevention activities, assisting elderly and disabled in villages, strengthening NCD preventing activities, promoting sanitary activities will be carried out under ‘Happy Villages’ programme, the sources added.
