No pow-wow with China over regime change: GL

The Joint Opposition yesterday refuted rumours that it had held discussions with Chinese officials on a possible regime change in Sri Lanka. JO member Prof.G.L.Peiris told the media in Colombo that no such talks had taken place during the recent visit of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to China.

“I was with the former President during discussions with Chinese officials. There was no talk about a regime change,” Peiris said.

However, Prof. Peiris said the JO was opposed to the sale of the country’s assets.

He said the move to set up an industrial zone with Chinese involvement in Hambantota encompassing over 15,000 acres of land will ignite discontent among the people in the area.

He described it as a move not favourable to Sri Lanka.
