The token strike of the postal service trade unions was terminated from midnight yesterday, after a letter was handed over to the Presidential Secretariat to be forwarded to the President.
Co-convener of the Joint Trade Union Collective of Postal Services Chinthaka Bandara said that all the employees of the postal services will report for duty from today as usual. It has been scheduled to deliver all letters and parcels dumped at post offices as the postal delivery service was also disturbed by the token strike.
The employees of the Postal Service are engaged in a trade union action for the consecutive second day yesterday demanding seven demands. Due to the trade union action normal duties of post offices and other related activities were stand still.
Meanwhile measures had been taken by the authorities to facilitate motorists to pay spot fines at the divisional secretariat level, since they were unable to pay spot fines at post offices due to the trade union action. .
This situation caused severe hardship to motorists as they were unable to pay spot fines at the post offices. Considering this situation, a special desk was opened to facilitate motorist to pay spot fines.
Bandara, addressing media, said all the letters and parcels at the post offices will be delivered by Friday. He added the unions were expecting a favourable reply to their letter, handed over to the Presidential Secretariat ,within two weeks.
Meanwhile the entrance road to Galle Face around Lake House was closed for traffic from Lotus Roundabout due to a protest march of the postal trade unions. Lotus roundabout area of Galle road was blocked as postal employees were marching towards the President’s Secretariat. Accordingly, severe traffic congestion was reported along Lotus Road in Colombo Fort due to the protest.
The joint trade union action of postal trade unions commenced from midnight Monday over seven demands including the revision of recruitment schemes, vacancies and promotions, resolving salary disparities, provision of infrastructure facilities relating to the postal service .
