The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) writing to the Power and Renewable Energy Ministry has warned of a possible power shortage during the period from January to April, 2017.
The PUCSL in its letter to the Secretary of the Ministry last Friday has recommended actions to mitigate the impact of power shortage.
Recommendations broadly include full utilisation of available thermal generation capacity, self generation by captive generators to reduce demand, addition of new generation plants, and increase contribution from rooftop solar generation.
The PUCSL has advised to reschedule the maintenance plans of several power plans to avoid shutting down of those plants during the critical period from January to April.
The PUCSL analysing the current power situation stated the successive failures of the monsoon has caused very low reservoir storage of less than 500 GWh.
