Upgrade roads before imposing fines: Collure

The Socialist Alliance yesterday urged the government to consider practical issues and international standards when devising road traffic rules, instead of trying to impose hefty fines as a solution to road indiscipline.

Social Alliance General Secretary, Raja Collure told the media in Colombo that there were a number of practical issues including the standards of roads and added that imposing strict fines without upgrading roads was not justifiable.

He praised President Maithripala Sirisena for getting involved and convincing those on strike to stop their action.

He added that the President should also take measures to annul the traffic fine increase until a comprehensive mechanism which addresses all issues related to road traffic is prepared.

The General Secretary also noted that the government should appoint an expert committee without delay to study the issue and come up with viable solutions.
