Wiggy renews call to further strengthen authority of PCs

Northern Province Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran on Monday renewed his call to further strengthen the authority of Provincial Councils.

Addressing a public event in Jaffna, Wigneswaran said a number of issues have arisen in the Provincial Councils due the Central Government’s reluctance to devolve certain powers vested with them.

The Chief Minister who mentioned land powers, added that the government’s refusal to vest such powers with the provinces has resulted in difficulties when dealing with the issues.

Wigneswaran said Provincial Councils will be able to handle matters more effectively when imparting its duty towards the public if the central government fully devolves powers to provinces.

He said there were a number of issues related to land ownership in the North and added that if the government entrusts powers to the Provincial Councils, his administration would be able to better deal with them.
