The SAITM private Medical College should meet with standards and be monitored, said a group of United National Party members yesterday.
They said that they dont object to it being run as a private medical college although it had been set up during the previous regime.
They made these observations at a press conference at the UNP Sirikotha auditorium.
UNP Parliamentarian Wijepala Hettiarachchi said that there is a shortage of 7,000 doctors in the country. The SAITM is ready to hand over their hospital to the government which is worth above Rs.600 million.
"There is a question as to why the government does not accept it when such a massive construction is granted to the government," MP Hettiarachchi questioned.
"This institute was set up during the previous regime. Nobody stood against it then. Even the Joint Opposition now stands against it".
He also said that Rs.600 million has been granted as a loan by a government bank to the SAITM when it was initiated.
UNP Parliamentarian Thushara Indunil said that large number of students are going overseas to study medicine paying over Rs.10 million.
"Male students who go to Bnagaladesh are not allowed to inspect females due to their religious sentiments," MP Indunil said.
