According to the latest records of the Ministry of Health Services, 284 positive AIDS patients have been found during the last year.
About 1.2 million blood tests have been done to detect positive AIDS patients countrywide last year.
It is believed that there should be about 3,900 positive AIDS patients countrywide by now. So far, about 400 deaths have occurred due to AIDS in Sri Lanka and about 2,841 positive AIDS patients have been detected in Sri Lanka. Out of the 284 AIDS patients who were found last year, 223 were males while 61 were females.
The majority of the positive AIDS patients who have been found were from the Colombo District and that number is 70.
Among all other provinces, about 141 patients have been found from the Western Province alone, said Dr. Sisira Liyanage, the Director of AIDS Control unit of Health Ministry speaking at a meeting of School Principals of the Kurunegala District held yesterday (16) in Kurunegala.
