The IEEE SS12 is an innovation competition organized to recognize the best social innovators on a global level. Under the theme of Empathy to Engineering: Solutions for Macro Issues, the IEEE SS12 was organized by the IEEE Sri Lanka Section together with the IEEE Madras Section Education Society.
The final leg of the competition was held on the 8th and 9th of September 2018 at the NSBM Green The event saw students from international universities participating in displaying their engineering skills. In addition, the event also saw the participation of over 50 invitees including eminent IEEE leaders and over 100 visitors. Throughout the two days of IEEE SS12, undergraduates and students from 9 different countries in the Asian region and Africa competed under 4 tracks.
Kicking Things off at SS12
Participants arrived bright at early for the Inauguration of IEEE SS12 2018. The event was graced by a number of guest invitees and the steering committee behind IEEE SS12 as well. Prof. Ramalatha Marimuthu – Chair IEEE SS12 2018 addressed those gathered, speaking about the SS12 and the nature of the competition.

Following this was a keynote address by Dr. Chandana Perera – Senior Lecturer, School of Engineering, NSBM Green University. He was preceded by a speech by Prof. Kithsiri Liyanage – Chairperson of IEEE Sri Lanka Section who spoke on behalf of IEEE Sri Lanka section.
After the giving a brief introduction about the competition, the inauguration session concluded and participants were directed to the competition areas to arrange their projects. Following lunch, the SS12 2018 took things up a notch. Here, parallel tracks took place. These were broken down into Innovation Challenge, Maker Fair, Junior Einstein and a Virtual Track.

In addition, there was also an exhibition as well. While Jehan Wijesinghe – CEO and Founder of IgniterSpace carried out a workshop in the Junior Einstein track, the other tracks were going through a number of evaluations as well.
The Finale of the IEEE SS12 2018
This was the day that everything came together. There was a tangible air of excitement in the hall . Starting off Day 02 od IEEE SS12, Prof. Parkash Lohana from IEEE Region 10 Humanitarian Activities Committee spoke about Humanitarian Activities and Values. His session was followed by a keynote speech by Dr. P A Manoharan – Chairperson of IEEE Madras Section. This keynote session was followed by Mr. Pasan Pethiyagoda – Regional Student Representative, IEEE Region 10.
Day 02 of the IEEE SS12 carried out more evaluations and exhibitions, much like the previous day. In addition, a workshop was carried out for A/L students around the areas. This was jointly organized by NSBM and the SS12 team. The session was headed by Jehan Wijesinghe, Chamath Palihawadana and Adheesha Gammanpila. With evaluations finishing at 2pm, the exhibition went on till around 4pm. After that, competitors were requested to be at the auditorium by 4:30 pm for the closing ceremony.

With Keynote speeches delivered by Heminda Jayaweera – Co-founder of Venture Frontier Lanka and Dr. Zia Ahmed – Chair, IEEE Australia Council, the award ceremony of IEEE SS12 kicked off. In terms of awards, the winners of the Junior Einstein track were given winning prizes and free subscriptions from Igniter Space. The winners of the Innovation Challenge would receive prize money and mentorships from Venture frontier Lanka.
All winners were also given Livit bands from Dialog. In addition, Women in Engineering Special awards were given for teams where the female contribution was higher. There was also an award for the most popular team. This was awarded to the team who got the most number of votes through the IEEE SS12’s official mobile app.
Innovation Challenge Track
16 teams participated for the finals held in Sri Lanka representing 8 countries. (Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Thailand, Uganda, United Arab Emirates, Afghanistan)

A total of 60 teams took part in the track. Out of these 60, 20 were selected for the final round. All projects were innovative and were addressing real-life problems. Projects were evaluated on their innovative solution, project presentation, prototype implementation and market study/commercial realization potential.
