FR challenging Ranil's removal

A Fundamental Rights petition was filed in the Supreme Court seeking an interim order staying the decision of the President to remove Ranil Wickremesinghe from the office of the Prime Minister on October 26.

This petition was filed by Oshala Herath, the former Deputy Director of the Presidential Media Unit naming Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya, Attorney General and 223 Parliamentarians as respondents.

Herath sought an interim order staying the decision of President to appoint Mahinda Rajapaksa to the office of Prime Minister from October 26.

The petitioner stated that the current political crisis that the country is embroiled in is ruining the image of our country worldwide, ruining the economy of the country and most importantly ruining the future of the country especially in relation to the future generations.The petitioner stated that unconstitutional, illegal, ultra vires, an arbitrary and unreasonable action of the President has directly contributed to the current political crisis.

This petition had been filed through Attorney-at-law Manjula Balasooriya.
