University students’ unions controlled by FSP, not JVP - Hemakumara

The power block of all university students’ unions lies on the hands of the Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) led by Kumar Gunaratnam and not with the JVP led by Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Western Province Governor Hemakumara Nanayakkara said. He said the JVP is a very weak political party today. This is because Kumar Gunaratnam’s party has taken the biggest lies of JVPs with him.

The Western Province Governor was speaking at a press conference at his office in Rajagiriya yesterday. Answering a question by a journalist on the President Maithripala Sirisena’s stance on the 20th Amendment to the Constitution proposed by the JVP, he said it is still not known as the aforesaid amendment is yet an unborn thing. “The 20th Amendment was introduced by the JVP. But, the people at the grassroots level of the JVP are very much disturbed about it. We know as to why the JVP top rung brought it and how many top notches went for secret discussions with some international NGOs.”

Nanayakkara said the JVP is on the decline day by day. They hasten the process of becoming weaker by bringing in the 20th Amendment, he said.

According to him, although the JVP had a base support of youngsters at grassroots level, they are now withdrawing from the party. “Therefore, the JVP is heading towards a very sad destination,” Nanayakkara said.

However, Governor Nanayakkara also said President Sirisena is not in agreement with the 20th Amendment at the moment.
