Music Racer Is A Fun Way To Listen to Songs

So you have a collection of music that you listen to while you travel. That’s completely fine. But what if you wanted to play a game while listening to music? Well, then you would have to mute the in-game audio to listen to your songs. But what if there was a way to play a game based on the songs you’re listening to? Well, that’s what Music Racer excels at.

Available for Android and for PC, the concept behind Music Racer is pretty simple. Yet at the same time, it is also quite intricate. Think of it essentially as a hybrid between a racing and endless runner game. You get to race a vehicle on a track. Sounds simple enough? Well, how about if you could do so while listening to your favorite song? Better yet, what if the track you’re racing on adapted to the song you were listening to?

Well, that’s exactly what Music Racer does. By using local music files or even YouTube videos, the game will generate a race track where the shape, speed, and mood of each track are based on the music you choose

Getting on track with Music Racer

If you’re going to use your own music tracks, you will have to grant permission for the app to access your device’s storage. The game also links to your Google Play Games account to keep track of your progress and earn achievements.

The Main Menu of Music Racer has a very nostalgic feel to it

The user interface has a Tron-ish retro feel to it. The left side of the screen shows you your current coin balance, the option to go ad-free, your achievements, a forum to join and also periodic offers to get free coins by watching an advertisement.

Music Racer pays homage to a number of popular references

You can scroll through the list of available vehicles to use and purchase new vehicles if you want. One thing I fell in love with was the attention to detail for each vehicle. There was also a number of pop culture references such as the classic BMW M3 from Need for Speed: Most Wanted, the lightcycle from Tron, the Star Killer from Star Wars and even KITT from Knight Rider. None of these are free, so you’ll have to earn them by races to be able to afford them.

Gentlemen, start your tunes

Speaking of races, it was time to test out Music Racer. I tried out a number of different genres to see how the game would adapt. And it did so quite well. The duration of each race is the duration of the song so choose wisely. As I said earlier, the track is generated based off the song you choose. If you pick an upbeat song, you can expect a lot of obstacles to dodge. On the other hand, picking a slower paced song will let you sit back and relax between dodges.

Music Racer

Behold! A track created based on a song that was selected.

You can switch lanes on the track by simply swiping left or right. This is needed in order to collect the coins along the track. In addition, if you finish the race without hitting a single obstacle, you will actually be rewarded with double the number of coins that you collected. However, hitting an obstacle will result in your combo-meter being reset and you’ll have to start from scratch. Fortunately, the coins you collected so far on the track are not lost. It’s just that the combo-meter is reset.

I see you have a nice combo. It would be a shame if you crashed.

Unlocking new tracks (pun intended)

Collect enough coins and you can unlock new content for Music Racer. The content can be new vehicles (such as one of the special ones I spoke about), and new tracks as well. Vehicles you unlock can also be modified in terms of body paint and rims (if they have wheels).

Get to the end of the track without hitting anything and your reward will be doubled

If you want to take a break from the standard races, Music Racer also includes a number of other modes that you can try out. With Zen mode, for example, there’s no keeping score or obstacles. Just you, the music you love and the open road. Cinematic mode strips things even further just keeping your vehicle on the road so that you can control the camera angles and see the track from every possible way. Hard mode is just that. Hard.

Music Racer is a brilliant time passer

The only drawback I found about the game was the ads. Now don’t get me wrong, ads are one way for the developers to get profits from their apps. But the way that Music Racer has implemented ads into the game somewhat diminishes and even ruins the gameplay experience for me.

For example, simply restarting a track will prompt an ad. These ads can’t be skipped either. So you just end up looking at your screen for about 15-20 seconds till the ad is over. This also means that by the time the ad is over and you can restart the track, you may lose interest in it.

Music Racer

Aside from the annoying ads that take up way too much time, Music Racer is a really good time passer

This is of course where that ad-free option comes into play. For around LKR 300, you can play the game without any advertisements. It is cheap by dollar standards. But when you factor in the conversion rate and the depreciation of the rupee, paying 300 bucks just to remove ads from an app seems like a waste of money.

That being said though if you find yourself bored and you love listening to music, definitely try out Music Racer. It’s fun, strangely addictive and you’ll find yourself listening to your songs with a whole new meaning.
