NDF Constitution: UNF leaders working on draft

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has reignited his ‘victory- of- Justice’ rally declaration at Galle Face to form a new democratic alliance by taking steps to forge a new party Constitution for that front.

The Constitution of the new alliance, or the National Democratic Front (NDF), as it may be officially called after its registration soon, is currently being drafted, said Plantation Industries Minister Naveen Dissanayake yesterday.

He said the Constitution of the National Democratic Front is being drafted by party leaders in the UNP-led political bloc, the United National Front.

The United National Front (UNF) is comprised of seven political parties.

The UNF’s Jathika Hela Urumaya Leader and Minister Champika Ranawaka, Sri Lanka Muslim Congress Leader and Minister Rauf Hakeem, All Ceylon Makkal Congress Leader and Minister Rishad Bathiudeen and Democratic People’s Front Leader Mano Ganeshan are currently drafting the NDF’s party Constitution, sources said.

Asked if there had been any problems as regards who is going to be the leader of that party- the Democratic National Front, Minister Dissanayake said that they have no problems revolving around the leadership of the new Front.

“The National Democratic Front is set to put its best foot forward to promote democracy on a strong foundation. The new Front will be committed to preserve the country’s unitary state,” UNP sources said.

“The Democratic National Front will make a conscious effort to bring together religious forces, political parties, civil organizations and trade unions around democracy, to strengthen the rule of law and respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms,” they said.

Prime Minister Wickremesinghe had said at the Galle Face rally that the National Democratic Front will be set up with the aim of abolishing the Executive Presidency and strengthening institutions.
