National Freedom Front Leader Wimal Weerawansa had reported to the Criminal Investigations Department today to record a statement over a conspiracy to assassinate VIPs.
Speaking to the Daily News the Director of the CID Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Shani Abeysekera said the CID had recorded the statement from the MP and he had left by last afternoon.
This alleged plot to assassinate President Maithripala Sirisena and former Defense Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa was revealed to the media by the Anti Corruption Movement Operations Director Namal Kumara.
Earlier, on January 23rd MP Namal Rajapaksa had also been summoned to the CID to record a statement over the same issue.
The CID had notified the courts that they would be recording statements from MP Wimal Weerawansa, his wife Shashi Weerawansa and MP Namal Rajapaksa.
Meanwhile, Former DIG Nalaka de Silva, who was arrested by the CID in connection with the alleged assassination plot had been further remanded until 30th January.
The former Director of the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) was arrested by the CID on October 25, last year.
