The Police Narcotics Bureau yesterday morning arrested a suspect with over 400,000 foreign cigarettes valued at Rs. 20 million from the Pettah area.
PNB officials nabbed the suspect while the cigarettes were being transported in a shipping container from Dubai.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the container was brought to Sri Lanka under the guise of importing spareparts.
The arrest was made following a raid conducted by the PNB on the container truck near the Pettah Clock Tower at around 6.30 pm last Thursday. The truck driver was arrested.
Police launched a special investigation to arrest the Kingpin of this racket who is a multi-millionaire form Wattala. Police investigations are continuing by the Director of the Anti - Narcotics Unit of Police in Colombo, Senior Superintendant of Police, Tilak Danapala under the instructions of DIG Sajeewa Madawatte.
