No evidence of assault by Ranatunga

The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) yesterday informed the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court that the CCTV footage had not revealed any evidence to show that an assault was carried out by Minister Arjuna Ranatunga at the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) last year.

The CCD informed Court when the magisterial inquiry into the case filed against former Petroleum Minister Arjuna Ranatunga for trespassing into the Ceylon

Petroleum Corporation (CPC) premises in Dematagoda was taken up before Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayarathne.

According to the complaint, the CCD informed court that the complainant had mentioned that the Minister had assaulted him during an incident which took place at the CPC premises.

MP Ranatunga had allegedly trespassed into the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) premises in Dematagoda on October 23 and caused minor injuries to a person during the conflict that ignited following his entry to the premises. MP Ranatunga is currently out of bail.

The Magistrate ordered the CCD to expedite the investigation. The Magistrate asked the CCD for the reason as to why they arrested MP Ranatunga without sufficient evidence against him.

The CCD further told court that they expect to seek instructions from the Attorney General. The Magistrate fixed further inquiries for March 1.
