For the first time in Sri Lanka a state of the art Dolby ATMOs sound system will be showcased to the Lankan film enthusiasts as Savoy Cinemas will premiere the much hyped about upcoming Marvel movie ‘Avengers: Endgame’.
Savoy Premiere, Wellawatte, which now comprises the high-tech sound system made out of hundreds of speakers, is part of the Savoy Cinemas group which has been taken over by Ben Holdings Company in recent times.
Selling a record number of tickets - 6000 tickets within six hours – for ‘Avengers: Endgame’, the team is now looking to bring more globally acclaimed films to the local movie goers. Some of their upcoming releases include Disney’s live action ‘Aladdin’, ‘Toy Story 4’ and ‘Artemis Fowl’. The team is also hoping to upgrade many of their film halls so that the viewers will be able to enjoy the films to the hilt as they will be provided with a completely unique experience. The Dolby ATMOS sound system will allow the sound to sweep through the auditorium creating a life-like depth. It feels like you have been imported to the story which is unfolding on the screen before you as the sound circles you and drags you into world which exists across the wide screen.

“With over 30 years in the field Savoy Cinemas will continue developing the movie going experience for the whole family. We are the only company who own the exclusive rights to distribute Marvel and Disney movies in Sri Lanka,” Ben Holdings Chairman Alex Lowell said.
Ben Holdings Group Director G T Jeyseelan noted that though their mission is to bring world class productions to Sri Lanka, they will continue with the task of promoting Sinhala and Tamil movies in the country as well.
“We look to import, produce, direct and distribute films. We are already looking to produce a film. There is a lot of competition in this field but we see it as something positive as we believe that competition raises the bar of future productions,” Savoy Cinemas CEO Geevaka Pallegama added.
The possibilities of installing the first IMAX cinema in Sri Lanka is another idea they are pondering over. Since this is a costly venture they are more keen to bring VMAX – a much cheaper version with high quality experience.
Savoy Cinemas currently have 66 per cent of the market share. They plan to increase this to 75 per cent in the short term. They also have over 45 cinemas island wide with another seven cinemas to be completed by the end of 2019.
