A Fundamental Rights petition filed seeking an order to investigate and prosecute the Inspector General of Police under section 294 of the Penal Code was fixed for support by Supreme Court.
Supreme Court two-judge-bench comprising Justice Buwaneka Aluvihare and Justice Preethi Padman Surasena fixed the petition for support on May 21.
This petition had been filed by businessman Janath S. Vidanage, the Managing Director of the Danata Travels and Tours (pvt) Ltd naming IGP Pujith Jayasundara, former Defence Secretary Hemasiri Fernando and Attorney General as respondents.
Senior State Counsel Induni Punchihewa appearing for the Attorney General informed court that her Department has not taken decision not to appear on behalf of other respondents including IGP.
The petitioner seeks to challenge inter alia the persistent failure on the part of the Inspector General of Police to investigate and failure to take appropriate steps to safeguard the public security.
