SLFP condemns attempt to tarnish President’s image

Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) yesterday condemned the attempt to post 600 letters containing defamatory remarks against the President to chief incumbents by Minister Lakshman Kiriella’s media unit.

Addressing the media yesterday at the SLFP Headquarters, SLFP General Secretary, MP Dayasiri Jayasekara said that the letter was a translation of an article recently published in a popular news website.

The General Secretary alleged that Minister Kiriella is not the only person behind this incident and some UNP MPs attempting to put the entire responsibility for the Easter Sunday attacks on the President and wipe their hands clean of responsibility.

This is a clear attempt to disrupt and sabotage the work of the President.

He added that the effort taken by President Sirisena to declare the Theravada Tripitaka as a World Heritage and his war against drugs and narcotics had been highly appreciated by the Maha Sangha.

“By sending a letter which claims that the President was informed about the foreign intelligence reports predicting the attacks especially to the monks, they wanted to tarnish the good name of the President,” the MP said.

Till the Law and Order Ministry was taken over by the President four months back, it remained under the UNP and they have not taken any information given by various groups regarding violent extremism to their consideration, MP Jayasekara charged. SLFP Youth Front Chairman MP Shantha Bandara was present.
