SLFP General Secretary MP Dayasiri Jayasekara said yesterday a series of proposals made by the SLFP under the theme ‘One Country, One Law’ will be extensively discussed by Parliament’s Sectoral Oversight Committee on National Security headed by its Chairman and MP Malith Jayathilake from yesterday to Friday.
“Our aim is to make this a reality in order to build up a modern Sri Lankan nation under a common set of rules within one country. Then it will be possible for all communities to work together and live in harmony without any misunderstandings,” he added.
Speaking at a media briefing at the SLFP headquarters yesterday, he said that these proposals were unanimously endorsed by the SLFP Central Committee. “We had discussions with religious leaders, the Opposition Leader and the leaders of all other political parties represented in Parliament, in this regard. We expect the support of all political parties to make this endeavour a success for the benefit of future generations,” he said.
“We should have a common system of law for marriages which will ultimately eradicate the differentiation between the religions and the different ethnic groups. We hope to introduce the law whereby the minimum age of marriage for a girl would be 18. We will also discuss steps to prevent the unnecessary growth of the population,” he added.
He said the party has decided to conduct a disciplinary inquiry against SLFP members who have been charged fore violation of party decisions in the recent past.
The party has also made a decision to introduce a code of conduct for all SLFP local government, provincial and Parliamentary members.
While responding to a question raised by a journalist about the SLFP’s decision on the NCM against the Minister Rishad Bathiudeen by the SLPP, the Minister said the SLFP Central Committee will make its final decision regarding the vote before June 18.
“However, we will be taking the correct decision and one that is definitely beneficial to the country. The SLFP will not allow the Select Committee appointed to probe allegations against Minister Bathiudeen to release its final report before June 18. This is because the Select Committee does not discuss the matters contained in the NCM, but only several charges related to the Easter Sunday attacks. Therefore, there is no point in whitewashing Minister Bathiudeen and then bringing in a NCM,” Jayasekara said.
He also urged politicians not to interfere with CID investigations against Dr. Safi of the Kurunegala Hospital. It is wrong for politicians to express their views on him until the investigations are over. Their views may lead to another spell of communal violence in the Kurunegala district,” he said.
“We will take legal action if ‘Samurdhi’ benefits are provided as political gimmicks. We urge the government to provide Samurdhi benefits to the real poor without politicising the entire project,” the SLFP General Secretary said.
