Panadura Chief Magistrate Amila Ariyasena remanded private coach owner P. Latin of Pinwala, Panadura, on the charge of making a false statement to the Panadura North Police Traffic Branch regarding an accident which occurred on the Panadura-Pinwala Road.
On July 7, the driver of his private coach, Thilak Kumara, whilst being under the influence of liquor, crashed into a parapet wall by the side of the Pinwala Road.
The conductor of the coach then dragged Kumara out of the vehicle and onto the road. He drove the coach to the house of the owner and told him the story, whereupon the owner had rushed to the spot where the driver (Kumara) was lying and took him to the Panadura Base Hospital, where Kumara died the same day.
Panadura South Police Traffic Branch Sub Inspector S. Mendis and Sgt. Jayasinghe investigated the accident.
Latin had given a false statement to the police saying that he was the driver of the private coach when it crashed against the parapet wall by the side of the road. He had then found that an occupant (the actual driver in this case) had fallen on the road.
Police conducted investigations and arrested Latin and produced him before court with a B Report.
The Chief Magistrate considering the police B Report remanded Latin till July 23 and ordered the police to submit a comprehensive report regarding the accident and the death of the actual driver Thilak Kumara who was admitted to the Panadura Base Hospital, by the owner P. Latin, who had made a false statement to the police.
