The Yal Devi train derailed between Galgamuwa and Ambanpola railway stations yesterday disrupting the entire Northern Railway services throughout the day.
Sri Lanka Railways sources in Galgamuwa told the Daily News that at about 3.30 pm, five railway compartments had derailed between the Galgamuwa and Ambanpola stations. The derailed compartments had crashed about four kilometres away from the rail track.
The train was travelling from Jaffna to Mount Lavinia when it had derailed.
“There have been no fatalities or serious injuries to passengers as a result of the accident, and it is still premature to establish the dynamics of the accident,” Railway sources said.
“However, the railroad is severely damaged,” sources said.
According to Glagamuwa Railway Station sources, the “Raja Rata Regina” and “Intercity” 4022 traind were halted after the derailment. “The Night Mail train is also more likely not to be operated,” said the Railway sources.
“All trains running from Colombo along the Northern Railway Line will be limited to the Mahawa Railway Station until the the raiway track is restored, while train operations from Jaffna will be cut off from the Ambanpola Railway Station,” sources added.
