Army deserter arrested over weapon theft remanded

Vavuniya Magistrate E.M. Riyal ordered the two suspects who were arrested over the theft of a service weapon after stabbing a soldier on sentry duty in Bogaswewa army camp be remanded till January 9th, 2020.

Upon questioning of both suspects, the police were led to a house in Kekirawa where the stolen weapon had been stashed. It was also revealed that both individuals were army deserters.

Police investigations revealed that the individual had sought the help of another army deserter to steal the weapon since he intended to murder a family member over a domestic dispute. The army deserters not only stabbed a soldier on sentry duty but had also stolen his phone, which led investigators to Kekirawa.

The injured soldier is currently receiving treatment at the Anuradhapura base hospital.
