Information and Communication Technology State Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardane said that post offices island-wide would be provided with internet facilities soon.
He said that all post offices would be converted into tele-shops in order to provide a wider range of services and facilities, including bill payments.
The State Minister was addressing a media conference at the Information and Communication Technology Ministry.
“Two basic discussions were held with regard to this decision and we informed Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) to take immediate measures to complete the process within two to three months,” Abeywardena said.
The State Minister said the previous estimate submitted by SLT for this contract was a little too expensive, and that he had informed them to reduce it.
He further said that a decision has also been taken to provide a special data package at a concessionary rate to journalists who are registered at the Government Information Department.
