Brother Charles Anthony’s “Sihinaya” show banned on court order

Galle Chief Magistrate Harshana Kekunawela yesterday issued an injunction restricting the holding of a musical entertainment “Sihinaya” by Brother Charles Anthony Thomas scheduled to be held at the temple premises of Imaduwa Paragoda Rajmaha Viharaya in Ahangama, Galle.

Manager of Abigail Production and Entertainment Pvt. Ltd and two Buddhist monks namely Ven. Devalehinda Ajitha Thera and Ven. Paragoda Samitha Thera were cited in the injunction.

The magistrate issued the above order in consideration of submissions made to the Court by Imaduwa Police.

The Police in their submissions told the Court that granting permission to hold the above musical performance will lead to public upheaval and acts of sabotage and such a development would have adverse impact on religious co-existence. Police also submitted that Anunayake of the Kotte Sri Kalyani Samagri Maha Sanga Sabha of Shyamopali Maha Nikaya , Ven. Prof. Kotapitiye Rahula Thera also had informed the police in writing about the potential public unrest due to the holding of the musical programme.

The police had also received a number of public complaints regarding the issue.

Making their submissions police pleaded the magistrate to issue an injunction prohibiting the holding of the above event under Section 106 (1) of Criminal Procedure Code.

Subsequently the magistrate issued the injunction on consideration of the police submissions.

Imaduwa Police OIC IP Upul made the submissions assisted by Sergeant Karunadasa (6115).
