‘Govt. should reveal stance over Rajapakshe’s move’

Government-supporting Opposition MP Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe’s attempt to reverse the 19th Amendment through the 21st and 22nd Amendments is solely to please the President, JVP Propaganda Secretary Vijitha Herath said.

Herath said Rajapakshe plans to move these Amendments in Parliament as a Private Member’s Bill in the future and added, “It is totally a tribal move.”

The JVP Parliamentarian was speaking at a press conference at the JVP headquarters yesterday.

Herath said the 21st Amendment is aimed at increasing the minimum of five percent of total votes polled for political parties to be represented in Parliament. The 22nd Amendment is to grab the powers of the Constitutional Council and vest them with the Executive.

Therefore, the present government should express its stance to the country over these Amendments to be moved by the MP, Herath said.

He also said that it is not going to be a good move and therefore the JVP is against it.

Meanwhile, attorney-at-law Sunil Watagala said the move by Rajapakshe to replace the 19th Amendment with another is contradictory to the newly-elected President’s manifesto.
