“White Van” case: Suspects to be produced before courts

Two persons who were arrested in connection with making certain claims regarding “White Van case,” at a media briefing organised by former Minister Rajitha Senaratne are due to be produced in court today.

They were further remanded till today by theColombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayarathne.

The suspects were identified as Sakalawalli Arachchige Sarath Kumara and Athula Sanjeewa Madanayake.

When the case was taken up before the Magistrate, Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris appearing on behalf of the Attorney General informed court that former Minister Rajitha Senaratne had given money to both suspects through a person called Rumee Mohommed. The CID would obtain a statement from him in the near future.

Meanwhile, Former State Pharmaceuticals Corporation chairman Mohommed Rumi Mohommed Azeem, who surrendered to the Criminal Investigations Department over the “White Van” press conference, is also to be produced before court today.

He was ordered to be remanded till today by Colombo Additional Magistrate Shalini Perera. The suspect was charged with allegedly giving two million rupees to two persons, who spoke about alleged ‘white van’ abductions at a press conference prior to the last presidential election.
