Full scale probe into Suriyawewa Stadium incident

Sports Minister Dullas Alahapperuma yesterday ordered a full scale investigation into the incident at the entrance of the Suriyawewa International Stadium where Sri Lankan cricket fans were attacked during the Sri Lanka - West Indies 2nd ODI on Wednesday.

The Minister has directed the Ministry Secretary and the Sri Lanka Cricket Board to conduct an investigation into the incident

Issuing a press release, the minister said that he had called for a report from the authorities on this incident soon after the investigations are finished. The 2nd ODI match held on Wednesday was the first international cricket match held in four years at this stadium situated in the Southern Province. While expressing his displeasure over the attack, the Sports Minister also condemned it thoroughly. “A country which loves cricket and cricketers facing such a situation is very sad,” the minister stressed.

“President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa had personally contacted the Sports Minister on this matter and had instructed to look into this incident on Thursday.

The report would be presented to the President and the Prime Minister as well,” the minister said. Alahapperuma apologised to the spectators who were inconvenienced due to the attack.
