Responding to a question raised at an interview on Ministry of Health sought 1000 body bags from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to dispose bodies during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, th Director-General of Health Services Dr. Anil Jasinghe clarified that body bags weren’t invented only for COVID-19, its used internationally for a long time.
The requesting body bags from international Red Cross Committee (ICRC) is only a simple request.
Dr. Jayasinghe said that requesting for body bags does not anticipate a large number of deaths due to the coronavirus.
Body bags are used in emergency situations and disasters. For example
Body bags were used during Easter Sunday attacks as well to dispose bodies.
Therefore,as a precautionary measure the Health Ministry stocked such equipments.
Health officials of Sri Lanka play a vital role not only in preventing deaths but also in preventing disease, he added.
