Opposition opposes election in fear of defeat - Prasanna

Industrial Export and Investment Promotion, Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister Prasanna Ranatunga yesterday said the opposition members were raising a hue and cry that the election cannot be held even with the health guidelines in place because they cannot go before the people. They want to stop the general election as they oppose the polls in fear of defeat,” he said.

The Minister was addressing a meeting of local government members of the Minuwangoda Pradeshiya Sabha and the  Municipal Council the at Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) office in Minuwangoda yesterday.

“The opposition said the general election should be postponed as because the one metre distance between two voters cannot be kept.  This is hilarious. We must hold the election following the health guidelines instead of postponing it for the sake of democracy in the country,” he added.

“The health authorities  clearly stated that the country has a suitable environment to hold an election.  During the election, only one voter can enter the polling station at a time. So, protecting one meter-distance will not be a problem at all,” he said.
