The opposition attempts to postpone the election and to re-summon Parliament to sabotage the administration. The health authorities have informed the President’s Secretary that the Corona situation in the country will not hinder elections, Land, Wildlife and Environment Minister S.M. Chandrasena told Daily News at his office in Anuradhapura recently.
He said that members of the Election Commission (EC) have been on a tug of war regarding the election.
The Minister said the Rs. 5,000 allowance that has to be given for the next month was cancelled on the request of the EC since by providing it, the government will breach the election laws, Minister Chandrasena said.
He said the Government has to adhere to the directives of the Elections Commission.
So, we decided to stop providing Rs. 5,000 for the next month although the Government has got adequate fund to continue with the payment, Chandrasena said.
“The Opposition is hoodwinking the masses by shedding crocodile tears over the national level issues such as holding general elections, paying Rs. 5,000, appointing retired army personnel as ministry secretaries, bearing authorized expenditures to keep the country going by the President for gaining petty political advantage,” the Minister said.
“Opposition leaders including Sajith Premadasa are issuing contradictory statements to the media to misguide the public by levelling allegations against the Government,” the minister said. Meanwhile former Women Affaires and Childcare Minister Chandrani Bandara said that the Government is hiding its inability to pay Rs. 5,000 for June putting the blame on the EC.
“The same strategy was exercised with regard to the appointments given to graduates. They allege that the EC has stopped the scheme.
"We should commend the EC Chairman and its members for their independent decisions, Chandrani Bandara said. The President is not too late even now to summon Parliament to pass vital financial transactions, emergency healthcare projects and public welfare schemes, the former Minister said.
