802 Navy Covid19 Patients : why navy numbers are increasing ?

By Vyshnavy Velrajh

The consistent rise in the number of Navy personnel infected with COVID-19 is due to PCR or COVID-19 tests being conducted on specific groups of officers, Navy Media Spokesman Lieutenant Commander Isuru Sooriyabandara said.

The Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health said over 800 Navy personnel have been infected with COVID-19 so far in Sri Lanka.

It said 31 Navy personnel tested positive for COVID-19 yesterday, raising the total number of infected officers to 802.

When inquired in this regard, Lieutenant Commander Isuru Sooriyabandara told Newswire that the Navy has commenced identifying specific groups of officers who are engaged in frontline duties and conducting PCR tests on them in order to contain the spread of the virus within the Naval community.

The Navy is continuously identifying officers who may have come in line of contracting the virus, their close associates, tracing their contacts, placing them in isolation and carrying out PCR tests.

Close to 100 PCR tests are done per day, with results revealing between 60-70 officers being infected with the virus, thus showing an increase in the number of infected Navy officers, he said.

Lieutenant Commander Isuru Sooriyabandara said the Navy hopes this new initiative will contain the spread of the virus, with no more cases being reported by the end of this month.

He added that 426 infected navy officers have completely recovered so far and have been discharged from hospital.
