School uniform fabric to be purchased locally
The Cabinet of Ministers approved a proposal made by Small and Medium Business and Enterprise Development, Industries and Supply chain Management Minister Wimal Weerawansa to purchase the entire requirement of school uniform fabric from local textile manufacturers, Co-cabinet Spokesman Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena said.
He was addressing a media conference held yesterday at the Government Information Department to inform the decisions taken at this week’s cabinet meeting.
The Minister said this decision had been taken after several rounds of discussions held with Education Minister Dullas Alahapperuma and the representatives of Ceylon Textile Manufacturers Association.
The Cabinet of Ministers also proposed to appoint a committee of the experts in the field of textile industry to monitor this procedure.
Meethotamulla garbage dump: Compensation for vehicles
Cabinet approval has been granted to pay compensation for 36 vehicles totally condemned due to Meethotamulla Garbage Dump Landslide Tragedy, Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena said. The relevant cabinet paper had been presented by Mahaweli, Agriculture, Irrigation and Rural Development, Minister of Internal Trade, Food Security, Consumer Welfare Minister and State Minister of Defence Chamal Rajapaksa.
The Minister charged that even after three years, the previous Government failed to pay compensation for these 36 vehicles and a committee headed by Colombo District Secretary had been appointed to look into this matter and the due compensation had been estimated by that committee.
Nod for bail by video link
Cabinet of Ministers approved a proposal made by Minister of Justice, Human Rights, and Legal Reforms Nimal Siripala de Silva to implement a special mechanism of granting bail using a video link from prisons to magistrate courts without the accused being produced physically, Minister Dr.Bandula Gunawardena said.
Addressing the weekly Cabinet media briefing, the Minister said that the approval of Cabinet of Ministers also received to implement a pilot project covering the prisons in Colombo and suburbs after discussing with the authorities of Sri Lanka Telecom.
As it was informed by the Subject Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva, around 15,000 inmates currently in 23 remand prisons and around 5400 remand prisoners have to be transported daily for court appointments.
The Government has to spend Rs 441 million for that purpose.
