The Cabinet of Ministers approved a proposal made by Higher Education Minister Dr.Bandula Gunawardena to obtain a loan to pay Mahapola scholarship for beneficiaries without any interruption.
Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena said Rs.160 million is required monthly to pay Mahapola scholarship for around 60,000 beneficiaries and 51 percent of the required amount is collected from the Mahapola Scholarship Fund and 41 percent of the required amount of money is allocated by the Treasury,
“As a result of Covid-19 pandemic it is difficult to find the required funds. More than 70 percent of the country’s university students currently engage in their online learning activities successfully and it is also expected to submit another Cabinet paper for approval of the Cabinet to grant an interest free loan facility for students who do not have a laptop or PC to purchase one,”the Minister said.
