Police will launch an operation in Colombo tomorrow to nab people who fail to wear masks in public.
The health authorities recommended wearing a mask in public as curfew regulations were eased and day-to-day life gradually normalised to tackle the spread of Covid-19. However, the recommendation was overlooked by some people leading to the police to intervene. Those who fail to wear a mask will have to undergo 14-day self quarantine.
“The police had to advise about 19,000 people in the Western Province on Friday. Over 6,000 of them were those who did not wear a mask on and others who had it on the wrong way,” Senior DIG, the Western Province Deshabandu Tennakoon said, adding that this prompted the police to take action.
The police will record details of the people caught without masks and paste a quarantine notice on their residences. DIG Tennakoon said that the police will take action against bus drivers and conductors who violate health guidelines.
