The Special Task Force (STF) arrested a suspect over the recent attack on a restaurant in Soysapura, Moratuwa, on Saturday night.
The arrested suspect 34, from Samudrasanna Road, Angulana, Moratuwa is said to be the main suspect wanted for killing a Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia Municipal Councillor in May 2018. He was remanded in connection with the killing, but had later been released on bail. Police took a mobile phone and a Sim card in his possession into custody.
The arrest had been made by the STF Intelligence officers at around 8 pm on Saturday night (30) in Eluwila, Panadura. The suspect then had been handed over to the Mount Lavinia Police Station for further action.
Shots were fired on May 29 night targeting a restaurant in the Soysapura area in the Mount Lavinia police division. The attackers had initially attacked the hotel wielding swords and had later returned to shoot at the hotel on May 29. At the time of the second gun attack three police officers were on duty at the location, but had not taken any action to arrest the suspects.
The owner of the restaurant had stated that he had been receiving continuous death threats from a person in Dubai, who had been trying to extort money.
Subsequently, three police officers, a sergeant and two constables, who were on duty at the restaurant when it came under gunfire, were interdicted over charges of neglect of duty.
The arrested suspect was produced in Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court today (31).
