9 facts about family connections in last parliament

Research by Manthri.lk has revealed that over 70 out of the 225 members of the previous Parliament had immediate family members in politics.

The research highlighted the following family connections that existed during the 8th Parliament of Sri Lanka.

  • 71 members have or have had at least one immediate family member in Parliament, Provincial Council or Local Government Authorities.

  • 10 are third-generation MP’s.

  • 09 had sons in Provincial Councils.

  • 32 are sons or daughters of former MPs, with 2 instances where both the father and son are current MPs.

  • 04 pairs of brothers.

  • 03 sons of former Chief Ministers.

  • 04 nephews of current or former MPs.

  • 03 sets of first cousins.

  • 01 married couple.

The research further revealed actual numbers could be higher due to limitations in data availability.

Some MPs can fall into more than one category of family connections, it added. (Newswire).
