EC orders legal action against illegal motorcycle processions used for election campaigns

The National Election Commission has instructed the Police to take legal action against four illegal motorcycle processions that were reported in the Puttalam District.

Chairman of the Commission Mahinda Deshapriya said the order was issued after the Commission received four complaints in this regard.

An intense discussion was held with the Puttalam District Election Office after receiving many complaints on illegal motorcycle processions being conducted as part of election campaigns in the North-Western Province.

A request has been made to deploy the Police Special Task Force in Puttalam and intend to deploy the personnel in problematic areas in the district, he said.

Deshapriya further requested the public to inform the Police via hotline 1933 or the Election Commission on incidents of election violations or post a video of the incident on social media.

The Election Commission’s decision comes after video footage emerged of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Puttalam district candidate Sanath Nishantha Perera engaging in a motorcycle procession using a high- performance motorcycle without a registered licence plate or a helmet for his election campaign.
