Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) candidate Udaya Gammanpila has pledged to sow a plant for every preferential vote he obtains at the 05 August General Election.
The Leader of the Pivithuru Hela Urumaya made the pledge at an election meeting held in Battaramulla which was attended by environmentalists.
Stating that the election has now become the enemy of the environment, he highlighted the damage caused by firecrackers, posters, polythene, and vehicle processions.
Gammanpila said many candidates are under the misconception that a higher number of vehicles in their procession showcases their higher status, but do not realise the damage caused by carbon emission.
As only trees can solve the issues surrounding carbon emission and as a measure to lessen the impact on the environment due to carbon emission during the ongoing election campaign more trees must be planted, he explained.
SLPP’s Udaya Gammanpila further said that it is important to take action to protect the environment more than just pledging to protect it.
“If I win 300, 000 votes in Colombo, I will dedicate myself to plant 300, 000 plants over the course of 5- years’, he added. (Newswire)
