Muslims here form an integral part of the nation, and they will be well looked after along with other minority communities in the island, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said on Monday.
He was speaking at a meeting of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Muslim Federation of Sri Lanka headed by its National Leader Ali Sabry, PC.
The SLPP and Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) local government bodies Muslim members participated. The event was at the Rosewood Banquet Hall in Dehiwela.
SLPP Muslim Wing National Organizer A.L.M. Uwais Hajiar, former ministers Susil Premjayantha, Gamini Lokuge, G.L Peiris and Faiszer Mustapha and President’s Counsel Razeek Zarook addressed the gathering.
Rajapaksa said that the terrorism was eradicated from the country. “It was not a fight against the Tamils, but a fight against terrorists,” he said.
“We paved the way for Sri Lankans to live peacefully in their country,” he added.
He said that the Muslims should join the mainstream politics by shedding their differences. He also recalled that the disposal of those who died of COVID 19 was not a political decision, but a decision made by a team of expert medical officials.
The Premier recalled that during the Yahapalanaya government, there was a tussle between the Prime Minister and the President and the people suffered as a result.
Ali Sabry said that ethnic parties have no place in society. The Muslims should become partners of progressive parties whereby their community members can benefit from such allies.
“Gotabaya and Mahinda Rajapaksa combination has proved successful in running the government. “Their policies help the government reach greater heights. It is a great opportunity for the Muslims to join them for the betterment of their community,” he said.
“Sri Lanka’s fight against the Covid 19 has set an example to the world. The island recorded only 11 deaths and 2,039 cases. Of which 1,678 recovered and only some 350 taking treatment,” he said.
“Sri Lanka’s performance in the fight against the virus has been taken up as a test case by international organizations, which is a matter of pride to our nation’s efforts,” Sabry said.
