MSD reveals reason for Jeewan Thondaman’s special security

The Ministerial Security Division (MSD) has revealed that Jeevan Thondaman, the son of later Minister Arumugam Thondaman, was provided special security on the orders of high ranking officials from the Government, the Daily Mirror news paper reported.

Jeevan Thondaman was recently accused of misusing MSD officers provided for his late father during his election campaign.

Without mentioning specifics, the MSD said two Police officers were assigned to Jeevan Thondaman on the instruction of certain high ranking officials from the Government.

The Centre for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV) had forwarded a written complaint to the MSD accusing Jeevan of misusing MSD officers for his election campaigns.

The CMEV questioned the MSD if officers from its unit had been assigned to Jeevan based on a security assessment report.

The election monitoring body pointed out that no candidate contesting the General Election can be provided special treatment.

Jeevan Thondaman is contesting the General Election from the Nuwara-Eliya district under the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP). (Newswire)
