Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday (12) said that a new SLPP government will amend the Constitution if it has to and hold the Provincial Council election.
The new SLPP Government will not hesitate to hold the Provincial Council election even under the First-Past-the-Post (FPP) electoral system to avoid further delays. The Prime Minister made this observation at a meeting held in Padukka yesterday evening.
PM Rajapaksa also said that this is the first time in political history that an Opposition is not requesting the public to vote for them to establish a government. The Premier also noted that every government led by him secured the democratic rights of the citizens.
Speaking at the meeting PM Rajapaksa further said, “I got extremely happy when I entered this market premises. During our previous government, I visited this market grounds when I came for an opening ceremony of a school. Then, I directed then Defense Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa to recreate this land better suited for businesses. Now, today, as we are gathered here, we are able to meet at a better maintained, clean area.”
Speaking further PM Rajapaksa said that the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna which started from a small meeting has grown into a powerful force. “We were able to get about 4000 representatives elected in the local government election. We won the election securing 71% of votes in that election. We secured a grand victory in areas other than the North and the East. We will hold the provincial council election after the general election. We will amend the Constitution if we have to and follow the First-Past-the-Post electoral system.”
Prime Minister Rajapaksa also said that the Yahapalana government failed due to the disagreements between the then President and the Prime Minister. “We as the Opposition gave our best during the last five years. Now the UNP is in two factions. They are competing in the general election not for a victory or to establish a government. They are competing to grab the power in Sirikotha. They should try it out at the Courts. So, from the young men and women in this country, I earnestly request you to join us to build this country.” Rajapaksa said.
The Prime Minister also noted that the government has commenced a project to develop hundred thousand kilometers of roads. He also observed that the SLPP has introduced a good team to compete in the General Election.
