Mayor of Kurunegala Thushara Sanjeewa has stated that he is prepared to accept any punishment if it is proven that he demolished the king’s court of King Buwanekabahu.
He further said some politicians were attempting to make use of this fact for the benefit of their election campaigns.
Showcasing some items from the demolished building, Thushara Sanjeewa said there is proof that there was no historical building in this location.
The Mayor of Kurunegala together with officials from the Urban Development Authority (UDA) had demolished the building on 16 July for a road development project.
The Department of Archaeology had filed a complaint with the Kurunegala Police claiming that the Mayor had demolished a 13th Century King’s Court (dating back to the Kurunegala / Yapahuwa Kingdom Era) that was under its supervision.
Following the demolition, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa appointed a 5-member expert committee to look into the matter. (Newswire)
