Voting: Disabled can apply for transport now

The Election Commission has issued an application for physically disabled persons on special transport facilities to reach polling stations during the Parliamentary Election to be held on August 5.

According to an announcement made by the Commission on Saturday, any person with a physical disability who cannot convey him or herself to and from the Polling Station by foot or in public transport, can apply in writing to the Returning Officer of their relevant district to use a vehicle for such conveyance.

Accordingly such persons “may under Section 83(4) (d) apply by himself, or by any other person on his behalf, not being a candidate, polling agent, authorised agent or a regional agent apply in writing to the Returning Officer of the District to use a vehicle for the purpose of such conveyance.”

The Election Commission observed that “it is required under the law that the application for this facility should be sent to reach the Returning Officer seven days before the date of the poll, July 29,2020. If the Returning Officer is satisfied, he will issue a permit to the person to use special transport facility.”

The Election Commission also observed that the Returning Officer will be relieved if the application is submitted along with a Medical Certificate obtained from a Registered Medical Practitioner (Western or Indigenous) confirming that the applicant is unable to travel by foot or by public transport to the polling station. Such medical reports should be issued free, the EC stated.

The specimen application form is available in the official website of the Election Commission.
