The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), which was once one of the most powerful political parties in the country, has now suffered a serious setback due to weak leadership, Matale District SLFP Organiser Kusumsiri Ariyarathna said. He was speaking at a media briefing held at his residence in Pohoranwewa, Dambulla.
“The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) was able to claim a landslide victory at last year’s Presidential Election because we all worked together. But, at present, ministers and other members of the SLPP are relentlessly criticising us SLFPers,” he said.
Meanwhile, the party leadership is silent whenever grassroot-level members inform them about anything. They always neglect the grievances of these members and only see about protecting themselves and their positions, Ariyarathna added.
It is also unfortunate that the SLFP’s leadership has not been able to educate their supporters about the present situation and the party has fallen to the point where even its supporters question whether they should remain loyal to the party, he said.
The shortsighted actions of the SLFP general secretaries during the past few years have led to its near destruction. Therefore, the party’s leadership should act immediately to eradicate the current controversy surrounding the party and implement a permanent solution to protect it, he added.
