Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Ratnapura district candidate Premalal Jayasekera will be allowed to contest tomorrow’s (05) General Election, despite being sentenced to death over a shooting incident.
The Ratnapura High Court last week sentenced to death Jayasekara and two others for shooting to death another during the 2015 Presidential election.
The shooting had occurred when a group of United National Party (UNP) supporters was decorating a stage set up for the political rally of Presidential candidate Maithripala Sirisena in Kahawatte on 05 January 2015.
Elections Commission chairman Mahinda Deshapriya told NewsWire that the candidacy of Jayasekara remains valid despite the death sentence as there is no low to remove his candidacy.
“If the candidate wins we have to take legal advice on what to do, and as of now his candidacy is valid” he told NewsWire.
Meanwhile, Secretary to the SLPP Sagara Kariyawasam said the death sentence imposed on Premalal Jayasekara will not be an obstacle for his victory in the General Elections.
Jayasekera will be allowed to be elected to Parliament as the people’s representative of the Ratnapura district and will work for the benefit of the people of the district, he added.
Kariyawasam made the observation when addressing a meeting of party supporters in Nivithigala. (Newswire)
