The Government will take measures to completely ban the import of ready-made apparels within the course of next year.
Speaking to reporters in Hambantota, Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said a number of decisions have been taken with a view to restrict imports and support Sri Lankan Industries.
Last week, the Ministry of Trade announced that it was planning to restrict selected ready-made apparel products which were permitted to be imported through an extraordinary gazette notification recently.
The decision was taken following concerns raised by exporters and local manufacturers during a meeting with the President on last Wednesday (23).
The Ministry said a committee will be appointed to review each ready-made apparel item and a decision will be drawn to restrict those that could be produced in Sri Lanka. (NewsWire)
