Sri Lanka Govt debt increased by Rs 1000 billion within first 6 months of 2020

The outstanding loan payment of the Central Government of Sri Lanka at the end of the first 06-months of 2020 stands at Rs. 14, 052 billion, the weekly economic report of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) reported.

According to the report, the outstanding loan payment by the end of 2019 was Rs. 13,031.5 billion, while the total outstanding amount by the end of June 2020 was Rs. 14,052.2 billion, an increase of Rs. 1000 billion.

For the first time in history, the outstanding loan payment of the Central Government of Sri Lanka surpassed the Rs. 14, 000 billion mark in April 2020.

In April 2020 the loan payment stood at Rs. 14,024.7 and decreased to Rs. 13,895.9 billion by May 2020.

However, the amount increased to Rs. 14,052.2 billion by the end of June 2020.

The CBSL said at the end of the first 06- months of 2020, Sri Lanka’s national loan payment increased from Rs. 6,629.1 billion to Rs. 7,530.8 billion.

The outstanding payment of foreign loans increased from Rs. 6,402.4 billion to Rs. 6,521.4 billion during the same period, the CBSL added. (NewsWire)
